How to be a Writer

A friend of mine in the early days of her career as a writer only focused on writing, without being concerned about whether she had the required skills or the talent to become a writer. She believed that if she continuously kept herself busy writing, sooner or later some of it would eventually turn out good. This tremendous focus on the act of writing finally did get her the awards and honors that come to mind when we think of ‘real’ writers.

This has led me believe that making writing a habit along with some more effort can turn any person into a good writer. Following are some suggestions that will help you become a better writer:

Schedule Time To Write:

Although it may not be possible to write every day, but take it on priority and make time for it by setting everything else aside. Make it a habit. Unless you write regularly you are not a writer. This applies irrespective of whether you are new to writing or an experienced writer.

Read Good Books:

Reading a lot of good books is one of the most important things you must do if you wish to become a good writer. In fact it is one of the best ways to learn to write. Various respected authors have emphasized upon this over and over again in their books and interviews. Stephen King in one his books states,

“Good writing teaches the learning writer about style, graceful narration, plot development, the creation of believable characters, and truth-telling.”

Keep Your Audience in Mind:

Award winning writers such as Avi Wortis believe that writing is all about keeping your audience in mind rather than writing for yourself, your mentors, teachers or anyone else. Writers write for various reasons, but real writers keep in mind the impact that their writing will have on their audience. It is alright to think about yourself when you write a personal diary, but it does not work that way when you write something that is to be shared with others.

Communicate and Network With Other Writers:

Being a part of a writing community is priceless. This is a place where you can get advice and feedback about your writing, different ways of getting your work published, and even sympathy in case of rejection. It will help you make friends with whom you can share what you are working on and what you are reading. A community of experienced writers will help you overcome many fears that often arise throughout a writers career.
